This is a wonderful antique porcelain basket, encrusted with flowers and a moss finish, and made by John Bevington of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Bevington was active from 1863 until 1892 and was known for being inspired by Dresden china, hence the elfinware decorative style of this piece. The underside of the basket is stamped with the British Royal coat-of-arms with text that reads By Royal Letters Patent John Bevington Kensington Works Hanley Staff. The Royal Letters Patent was issued by, at that time, Queen Victoria, and Bevington received it in 1880, so this basket dates, most likely, to the 1880s. Bevington was located at the Kensington Works from 1872 until 1892. The piece measures 9 in diameter with a height of 6 1/4 and weighs 3 lbs and 10 oz. It is in very good condition - the only defects are a couple of chipped petals, and maybe a small branch, very minor (see last close-up photos), surprisingly intact for a piece of its type and age.
This is a beautiful piece of Victorian porcelain - intricate and delicate looking, yet robust. Gorgeous display piece!
